The Centre of Scientific and Technical Information of the Lublin University of Technology implements projects aimed at disseminating research results, promoting the principles of open science, and increasing access to educational and scientific resources and collections.

These activities are carried out in cooperation with national and international institutions, often within the framework of grant programs and initiatives supporting the development of science and academic culture.

The initiatives undertaken include, among others, documentation projects, digital repositories, exhibitions, educational events, and initiatives promoting equality in access to knowledge and university infrastructure.

Below we present selected projects that reflect the interdisciplinary nature of the Centre’s activities and its commitment to creating a modern, open space for science and education.

Social Responsibility of Science – Support for Scientific Libraries

Funded by the Ministry of Education and Science

Project title: Digitisation of the journal “Technika Lotnicza i Astronautyczna” (Aviation and Space Technology)

Agreement number: SONB/SP/548651/2022

Project duration: 17 October 2022 – 17 October 2024

Total project value: PLN 163,419.55

Amount of funding awarded: PLN 136,189.55

Project Manager: Joanna Adamczuk, MA

Summary:

The aim of the project Digitisation of the Journal “Aerospace and Aviation Engineering” is to preserve the printed collection of the journal (through digitisation and publication of archival issues in open access) and to promote the scientific and technical achievements of Polish aviation designers, as well as to present the tradition of aviation in Poland.

By making the journal issues available, it will be possible to revisit important historical events, including the first flight of a LOT airplane from Okęcie Airport in Warsaw. Equally valuable are reports from seminars and congresses organised by Polish and international aviation industries, summaries of the activities of the Aviation Sections of SIMP and SITK, descriptions of patents, 20th-century technical innovations, technological solutions used in agriculture and forestry, biographies of Polish aviation designers, and aviation-related technical vocabulary presented in several languages. The project will also provide insight into the design concepts of aircraft prototypes through unique technical schematics and photographs.

The project’s main outcome will be the publication of 392 archival journal issues (13,615 graphically processed scans) in the Digital Library of Lublin University of Technology (changed into the Repository of Open Collections and Knowledge) and on Lublin University of Technology Publishing House (LUT PH) journal platform. The resources of the Digital Library will be indexed by the Federation of Digital Libraries, the Europeana cultural heritage portal, and the central library catalogue WorldCat. Like all publications in the Digital Library of Lublin University of Technology, the journal will be made available under a CC BY-SA 4.0 PL license. The university journal platform is based on open-source software, widely recognised as one of the leading systems in the world for managing, editing, and publishing periodicals. The collection will be compiled to achieve maximum completeness. Archival issues of the journal will be deposited by editors on the platform in PDF format along with metadata.

As a result of the project, users will be able to freely browse and download the archival journal issues via the Digital Library of Lublin University of Technology and the LUT PH journal platform.

The project aims to update, expand, and maintain the “BazTech Database of Polish Technical Journals” (http://baztech.icm.edu.pl/) during 2022–2024. The database registers and provides free-of-charge access to descriptions from 752 journals (including 474 currently active) published by research units, scientific institutes, committees of the Polish Academy of Sciences, scientific associations, as well as professional journals and conference materials indexed in scholarly periodicals.

Specific objectives:

  • To provide a complete and reliable source of information on publications appearing in Polish journals in technical, exact, and environmental sciences.
  • To promote and popularise the achievements of Polish scientific and technical thought in order to increase the impact of Polish science on the economy and innovation.
  • To stimulate public interest in research results through non-commercial dissemination of publication information, and to actively contribute to the development of open science and e-learning by expanding the database into an open full-text collection.
  • To enable bibliometric analyses through citation registration (reference bibliographies).

The implementation of the project contributes to the popularisation of knowledge and science by making the database and the scientific and development works it contains accessible to society and the economy.

Expected results:

  • Expansion of the database with 31,050 records
  • Addition of 21,735 bibliographies
  • Addition of 8,050 affiliations

Additionally, the database will be enriched through:

  • A collection of articles published in open access (OA) in technical sciences via negotiations with approximately 60 journal publishers
  • Assignment of DOIs and inclusion of about 3,000 PDF files for archival issues
  • Integration of ORCID identifiers

Providing access to BazTech increases the availability of scientific information, positively affecting the country’s social and economic development and enhancing the significance of science. The project contributes to increased competitiveness by diffusing knowledge beyond major university centres to smaller towns and rural areas. Through the OAI-PMH standard, the data are indexed by services such as Google Scholar, contributing to a higher number of technical science publications and increasing the H-index of Polish authors.

The reach of BazTech will be further expanded through social media presence and wider access to research results using IT tools that enable data exchange according to license terms. The sustainability of the project outcomes will be ensured by the Consortium through the continuous maintenance of the BazTech database. Records introduced during the project will remain available in the database, guaranteeing longevity beyond the required project period.
