A geographical indication (GI) is an indication used on products that have a specific geographical origin and have qualities or a reputation resulting from that origin. In order for a mark to function as a geographical indication (GI), it must identify the product as originating from a particular place. Furthermore, the qualities or reputation of the product should essentially result from its place of origin. Since these characteristics depend on the geographical location of production, there should be a clear link between the product and its original place of production.
