Bibliography managers are software tools that support the creation and organization of literature references and the generation of bibliographies. They facilitate work on scientific articles, theses and reports where precise citations of sources are necessary. The most popular bibliography managers include Zotero, Mendeley, EndNote Citavi.

The main functions of bibliography managers include:

  1. Reference management: They allow users to store, edit, and organize bibliographic records. Literature can be easily arranged in thematic folders, with the option to add annotations and mark important materials.
  2. Automatic generation of citations: These tools enable users to insert citations directly into a text (e.g., in word processors such as Microsoft Word or Google Docs). This makes adding references quick and ensures consistency with the selected citation style (APA, MLA, Chicago, IEEE, etc.).
  3. Integration with databases and search engines: They allow quick importing of publications from academic databases (e.g., Google Scholar, PubMed, JSTOR) and library catalogues. This makes it possible to add new sources directly to a personal collection.
  4. Synchronization and collaboration: Many bibliography managers offer online synchronization and the option to share bibliographies. This enables work across different devices and collaboration with others, which is particularly useful in research teams.
  5. Automatic creation of bibliography: Based on the collected references, the programme generates a complete bibliography in the selected format, which saves time and minimizes the risk of errors.

The choice of an appropriate bibliography manager depends on individual preferences and needs. Zotero and Mendeley are popular in the academic community due to their ease of use and the availability of free versions, while EndNote is often used in academic institutions that require more advanced literature management options.

Recommended Bibliography Management Programmes

EndNote enables users to:

  • search databases and online catalogues,
  • transfer selected bibliographic records to folders (groups) created within the programme and build personal bibliographic databases,
  • automatically create citations and reference lists,
  • choose the format of bibliographic descriptions,
  • share bibliographic data with other registered users.

Note: Working with EndNote requires registration in the Web of Science (WoS) database.
If the EndNote Web page does not appear, the session should be renewed by clicking “establish a new session.”

Zotero is a non-commercial and open-source tool that facilitates working with academic literature, organizing sources, and managing bibliographic records while supporting various citation styles. It allows users to create collections of documents including articles, images, audio files, videos, website snapshots, and to describe them using their own keywords and filter them. Zotero detects documents directly from the browser and allows them to be added to a personal library. It also integrates with word processors and the most popular web browsers.

Mendeley is free software designed for managing, organizing, and sharing scientific publications. The current version of the programme consists of three basic applications that are fully integrated:
